Gas Meters Need A Little Space

Thursday, August 09, 2018

gas meter with space around itNatural Gas meters need space around them to ensure they continue working properly and so we can easily access them for maintenance or in emergency situations. Under Virginia state safety standards, there needs to be a minimum of 6 inches on all sides of the meter, and 36 inches of space in front of the meter. Please see the diagram below for clarification.

Fortunately, we can work together to ensure your meter has adequate space and is in proper working order:

  • We’ll inspect your meter periodically and contact you if we see any issues. This is part of our regular safety inspections. If we find foliage or other obstructions near your meter we’ll contact you about next steps.
  • Please clear any foliage or obstructions in front of or around your meter if you see them. Check your meter occasionally to ensure foliage hasn’t grown up around it, and be cautious about putting in structures like decks and fences too close to your gas meter. If you do see foliage growing up near your meter, please clear it as soon as possible.

Thank you for being a Columbia Gas customer. If you have any questions about space around your meter, please feel free to reach out to us at communityrelations@columbiagasva.com
