Chester, VA – Columbia Gas of Virginia is teaming up with the Urban League of Greater Richmond to kick off their first-ever joint Energy Youth Ambassador Program. The program champions workforce development in the Commonwealth by providing area high school students with a chance to learn first-hand about the natural gas industry.
“We are proud to support the Urban League of Greater Richmond and programs like this one, as we work together to build strong communities in Virginia,” said Columbia Gas of Virginia President and Chief Operating Officer Jennifer Montague. “Our young people are the future of the energy and natural gas industry, and we’re thrilled to be able to share our time, talent and resources to help them prepare to be the leaders of tomorrow.”
“The Urban League of Greater Richmond is delighted to partner with Columbia Gas of Virginia to create and implement our Energy Youth Ambassador Program,” said President and CEO of the Urban League of Greater Richmond Larry Murphy. “The program will change the lives of our students and improve our community.”
The participating students are from high schools in Hopewell and Petersburg. During the Energy Youth Ambassador program, which wraps up at the end of July, they will have access to and spend time with subject matter experts who will help them:
- Gain knowledge about utility and energy issues;
- Acquire technical and leadership and job transferable skills; and
- Participate in community service projects.
“This is a great opportunity to highlight for the students the benefits of this field as a potential career path,” added Montague. “It pays well, allows for unlimited professional development and advancement and offers an alternative way to finance educational needs, in lieu of more traditional routes.”
