Chester, VA – Feb. 24, 2014 – Columbia Gas of Virginia (Columbia Gas) has received notice that individuals in Portsmouth may be using the company’s name in their door-to-door sales pitch to pave driveways with left over cement or asphalt.
Columbia Gas of Virginia has reported this potential scam to the local police departments and will prosecute any person using the company name for illegal purposes. All Columbia Gas employees and contractors carry photo identification.
To avoid being a victim, Columbia Gas offers these suggestions:
Always ask to see photo identification before allowing any stranger into your home.
Ask to see their Virginia business license number and or local permit.
Verify with local authorities the legitimacy of the company or organization.
Columbia Gas employees and approved contractors drive clearly marked vehicles, photo identification and uniforms.
All account transactions are handled through the mail or online.
Immediately Report Suspicious Activity to the Police. If a person, claiming to be a Columbia Gas employee does not have proper identification, immediately call 911 and Columbia Gas at 800-544-5606. Give them a detailed description of the individual and their vehicle.
