– Columbia Gas of Virginia and the NiSource Foundation have made a $15,000 grant to The United States Army Women’s Museum at Fort Lee. The donation is being made to support educational programs offered by the Museum to public schools in the area, which focus on the contributions made by women to the history of the United States military and our country.
The museum highlights these advancements by telling the stories of remarkable women who have made contributions to the U.S. military in every period since the Revolutionary War. More than 10,000 elementary, middle and high school students from area schools take advantage of the living history programs offered by the Museum each year, and the grant will underwrite .the continuation and expansion of those important programs.
Columbia Gas President Carl Levander made the contribution to retired Army Lieutenant Colonial Patricia Sigle, President and, founding director of the Friends of the Army Women’s Museum Association.
“Columbia Gas of Virginia is proud to support the educational programs provided by the U.S. Army Women’s Museum at Fort Lee. Since 1847, Columbia Gas has played a key role in providing energy to the Commonwealth of Virginia, and we understand the historical significance of the military in Virginia. It is our goal that through this grant we can help more young people gain an appreciation of the historical contributions of women who have served our country,” Levander said.
The U.S. Army Women’s Museum at Fort Lee serves as an educational institution providing military history training and instruction to soldiers, veterans and the civilian community. It is the only military museum in the world that chronicles the role women have played in serving our country from 1776 to the present. The museum is free to the public and additional information is available at www.awm.lee.army.mil
