Columbia Gas of Virginia customers will see their monthly bills increase slightly in June, compared to the current level, but average bills will remain more than 7 percent lower than June 2011.

The typical monthly customer bill will be a seasonal monthly amount of $37.16 compared to the same time last summer of $40.00 – a 7.1 percent reduction – but up from the $35.68 average customer bill in May 2012. This comparison is based on a 23 Ccf seasonal monthly summer usage level. A Ccf is the measurement used for natural gas usage and is the equivalent of 100 cubic feet.

“The continued value realized by our customers reflects the abundance of reliable domestically-produced natural gas which is keeping the cost of natural gas at the lowest level in recent years,” said Carl Levander, Columbia’s president. “We encourage our customers to participate in WarmWise, our energy efficiency program, and to take advantage of the Budget Payment Plan enrollment reflected on their current bills. These free services provide price stability and ways to save additional money”

This billing adjustment reflects a continued decline in the cost of natural gas, partially offset by a Virginia State Corporation Commission approved rate adjustment which allows the company to recover its authorized levels of costs in people, equipment and materials necessary for providing natural gas service. These costs are independent of the cost of the natural gas consumed by a customer, and adjustments related to their recovery are shown as a line item on customer bills.

By enrolling in the Budget Payment Plan customers can spread evenly the annual customer energy costs while WarmWise offers free products which can save on both natural gas and water consumption. In addition, customers are encouraged to use Columbia’s Direct e-bill, a paperless billing service which saves energy and the natural resources required to produce paper bills. Details on all Columbia programs can be found at

It is important to note that Columbia's gas costs are typically adjusted on a quarterly basis to reflect the price the company pays for natural gas, which by law is passed on dollar for dollar to customers without markup or profit.
