Natural Gas Prices Remain Low for Columbia Gas of Virginia Customers

CHESTER, VA. – March 1, 2012 – Effective today, Columbia Gas of Virginia customers will see their monthly bills decrease 13.9 percent compared to their current level. The typical monthly customer bill will be a seasonal monthly amount of $102.02 compared to the current level of $118.51. This comparison is based on a 100 Ccf seasonal usage level. A Ccf is the measurement used for natural gas usage and is the equivalent of 100 cubic feet.

This decrease continues the downward trend in natural gas prices over the past several years while other sources of energy have risen. For the same period in 2010, the typical monthly customer bill was $134.07 or 24% higher than today.

“Natural gas remains an exceptional value for residential, commercial and industrial use. We are grateful that the availability of an abundant domestic supply of natural gas is continuing to result in low energy prices for natural gas consumers, particularly as we look towards Virginia’s recovery from the economic slowdown,” said Carl Levander, Columbia’s president. “While our customers are benefitting from lower prices we encourage them to manage their energy use by participating in our WarmWise energy efficiency and conservation program and take advantage of the Budget Payment Plan that spreads evenly the annual customer costs.”

WarmWise offers customers free energy-saving products and personalized energy savings tips when they take the WarmWise Home Savings Evaluation. In addition, customers can qualify for cash rebates to improve the efficiency of natural gas equipment, insulation and windows for their home or business.

Columbia customers can access customer service, safety information and secure payment options through its new mobile web site m.ColumbiaGasVA.com. This site provides customer access to secure billing information, safety and other billing services. The site works with iPhones, iPads, Android phones and tablets and other mobile devices. Customers can also make a payment by credit or debit card if they have their bill or account number with them. The site also uses GPS (if available) to locate the nearest walk-in payment location.

Columbia's gas costs are typically adjusted on a quarterly basis to reflect the price the company pays for natural gas, which by law is passed on dollar for dollar to customers without markup or profit. The other components of a Columbia monthly gas bill include charges for the service and delivery of natural gas and state and local taxes.
