CHESTER, VA. – Dec. 7, 2011 – Columbia Gas of Virginia customers can expect to pay three percent less this year than a year ago and nearly 15 percent less than two years ago for their winter natural gas bills. Effective immediately, a typical residential customer will see a total monthly bill of $120.35 compared to a similar monthly bill in December 2010 of $124.12, and $138.42 in 2009, based on a 100 Ccf of seasonal usage.

This gas cost adjustment period covers the winter months of December, January and February. A Ccf is the measurement used for natural gas usage and is the equivalent of 100 cubic feet.

"The current gas cost adjustment continues the trend of lower natural gas prices which our customers are benefitting from again from this winter," said Carl Levander, Columbia’s president. "Today, natural gas costs are nearly 15 percent lower than in 2009 and when combined with additional savings by taking advantage of WarmWise, our energy efficiency and conservation program, , natural gas continues to deliver real value."

Levander added the WarmWise program offers cash rebates which can be used with the Federal energy appliance tax credits which expire on December 31, 2011.

By law, utilities like Columbia are required to pass through the costs they pay for natural gas to the consumer on a dollar for dollar basis without markup.
